PHILOSOPHICAL THOUGHT OF THE MOMENT:

I recently came across an interesting (seemingly obvious) point in my philosophy course on "critical thinking". I am currently in the early stages of the course where I am simply learning to identify an argument (again seemingly simple). Anyway, I found it exceedingly interesting as to what actually constitutes an argument and how an argument differs significantly from an opinion. An argument states a claim or belief and provides reasons or "proofs" in support of said claim or belief. An opinion on the other-hand simply states a claim or belief without any support. For example:

"Nuclear waste! I'm tired of hearing about it. The issue has been blown completely out of proportion. They should just bury it in the desert somewhere!"

The example above is not an argument, it is simply a vehement opinion (and an ignorant one at that).

Perhaps I have done a poor job at illustrating just how interesting learning to see everyday things in different (often clearer) light can be. At any rate, I'm loving it :)

Buddy who?

"Who is Buddy Green?" An excellent question! However, unlike Ayn Rand's similar query ("Who is John Galt?") in her internationally acclaimed novel Atlas Shrugged, the answer to this supposed mystery does not yield a world Saviour... despite Mr. Green's self-promoted alter-ego.

Unlike Buddy, you might be aware of what is called the RBC Olympian Program:

"The RBC Olympians program hires both Canadian Olympic and Paralympic athletes as community ambassadors who bring Olympic messages of excellence and leadership to Canadian communities .Athletes are provided with the opportunity to gain valuable skills that will help them prepare for life after sport, while also receiving much-needed funding to help them realize their Olympic and Paralympic dreams."

"Interesting... I wonder who the RBC Olympian representing Triathlon is?" Another excellent question! (Truly it's a pleasure having such an astute audience). Let us brainstorm together the obvious possibilities (as there are not many Canadian Olympians, the list should be quite short): Simon Whitfield, Lauren Campbell, Brent McMahon, Kathy Tremblay, Kyle Jones, Kirsten Sweetland, and Paul Tichelaar. Hmm, oddly enough none of these fine hard-working athletes are the Olympians representing Triathlon in the RBC Olympians Program.

Well maybe it is a young up and comer (possible future Olympian) receiving this vital (not to mention rare) support; that doesn’t seem so bad. Since the Canadian triathlon scene is so small, this list is fairly finite as well: Paula Findlay, Andrew McCartney, Kyla Coates, Andrew Russell, Marianne Hogan, Jeff Phillips, Alex Coates, Andrew Yorke, Connor Hammond, Alison Hooper, Jordan Bryden... the list goes on (I apologize to all those “known’s” that I did not list, this list is by no means exhaustive, simply a few off the top of my head).

While the contents of the latter list are debatable, one thing is for certain – Buddy Green is nowhere on the radar, and the fact that I can bet with favourable odds that you have no idea who I am talking about, speaks volumes.

So now to answer the initial query to which I’m confident you’ve figured out the solution to already. “Who is Buddy Green?” Buddy Green is the supposed Olympian receiving RBC funding, carrying the Olympic torch, and publicizing an elaborate lie about himself to RBC, impressionable youths, the Canadian athletic scene, his supposed fans (however mislead), and his fellow triathletes (however unconvinced and unknowingly).

The reason I am so incredibly offended by this farce is because of the 40+ true Olympians and potential future Olympians that work so hard and have earned that support many times over the wannabe’s and the delusional like Buddy Green. To my knowledge, Buddy Green races community triathlons and other age-group calibre races. On his RBC Olympic profile, he cites his most memorable sporting accomplishment as a swim meet at the age of 17 (he now appears to be in his late 20’s).

There is too little support and too many deserving athletes to have it wasted on a delusional, morally depraved, age-grouper. A small part of me feels bad for poor Buddy, I am sure he truly believes he is a 2012 Olympic threat... however; such naivety doesn’t justify such a grotesque embellishment. This elaborate lie ends here.

Peace and Love.

From the Vault (Tuesday, March 4, 2008)

Sometimes when I'm bored or procastinating (which I am on occasion) I enjoy reading my really old blog posts. They usually make me laugh pretty hard; mostly because I didn't realize what a tool I actually am haha ;) (notice I used present tense). The setting of this particular post is Edmonton winter 2008, I have an injured foot and a broken down vehical which, ironically and comically enough, forces me to run (on my injured foot) to all my workouts. hahaha :D

Last nights track workout wasn't my best workout to date by any means. My foot was very sore, walking was almost an intolerable activity. As opposed to warming up, my coach Glen, massaged/diagnosed the issue and told me to ice it. He said if the pain goes away with ice to continue with the workout, and if it doesn't then to go get x-rays to rule out possible stress fracture. So I iced it for 15-20 minutes in which the pain became much more tolerable. I then proceeded to complete the workout. It was a speed day. However, as soon as my foot numbed out, the pain returned, which caused the last couple intervals to be quite excruciating. Once the workout was complete I reapplied the ice until numbness occurred yet again, and then went for my cool down.

This morning (still without my vehicle) I was forced to run to swimming. It was considerably colder this morning with a healthy wind, and fresh snow on the streets. Probably over -20 with wind chill at that hour. This is not new to me however. During the coldest part of winter my last vehicle broke down for over a month, forcing me run to every practice (including running). There was a week where temperatures ranged from -40 to -56 with wind chill. Inevitably I got very sick. I calculated that in circumstances such as mine, I tack on anywhere from 6-12 kilometers of extra running per day (not including run practices/OYO runs) without a vehicle. As an elite athlete already bordering on over-training, this is extremely dangerous. Anyway, before I got side-tracked I was talking about the events of this morning. When I woke up and got out of bed at 4:30am I was uncertain whether on not I should go to swim practice as my only means of getting there was on my own two feet, and at that moment, I could barely apply my full body weight on one them. I proceeded with my morning ritual, again with a delicious raisin and cinnamon bagel with herbs and garlic cream cheese (solid purchase), then in a systematic type fashion I dressed myself into my winter running garments. Before I knew it I was limping down the hall toward the elevator. So much for common sense. Both runs to and from swim practice seemed extremely tedious and very painful. I am unable to cycle tonight because my bike is still stuck in the shop. Glen wants me to get it out of there ASAP. I am still deciding whether or not to try and clench my teeth through my Tuesday 45-60 min OYO run...

Peace and Love.
